Director’s Profile

Ivan Tovar (born in 1987 in Cali) creates work that explores the impossibility of knowing reality through mechanisms controlled by economic power, such as news and maps. At the same time, he challenges the artist’s role as an image maker in a world highly saturated with visual information.

His projects are presented in various mediums such as printmaking, video, sculpture-installations, and photography. His work has been exhibited in numerous independent spaces, museums, and galleries around the world, including the Saatchi Gallery in London, Art Shanghai, Raw Material Company in Senegal, ESSEX Art Center in the USA, and lugar a dudas in Colombia, among others.

He has been a resident in Amsterdam 2016 in the television program DeHoeksteen live, directed by the video artist Raúl Marroquín  and in Raw Material Company in Dakar-Senegal in 2019.

He has founded projects as platforms with other artists to do exhibitions programs as Babel Media Art in 2017, Nudo Collective in 2022.  He was also part of the independent space lugar a dudas from 2011, in which he managed the international residency program until 2020.

He has received an award as a cultural manager from the Secretary of Culture in Cali, Colombia, and an honorable mention from the Ministry of Culture of Colombia as well.
